Time for today’s deskercises?

We did enjoy this article that we read on The Telegraph website recently providing hints and tips on how we should all look to be healthier when sat at our desks in the office.

The article suggests such things as swapping your seat for a ball, carrying out “deskercises” (they even have a video for this), looking away from your screen, blinking and…we can see you sweating now on this one…putting your phone down!

We may smirk at some of the ideas, but the message is a good one, and one we should all take note of. As the article points out, a study in 2012 found that the average person in Britain spends 5 hours and 41 minutes sitting down everyday…Research suggests that should not be more than 4 hours.

Indeed, as reported on the Fellowes website, “the topic of employee wellbeing has grown in popularity in recent years. Many organisations are recognising the increasing importance and benefits of wellbeing programmes and initiatives.

“Not only is it a legal requirement to conduct a workstation assessment, it encourages employee engagement and demonstrates a duty of care for an organisation.

“Employees who have problems that are work-related or personal are unlikely to perform as well as they would if the problem did not exist. The impact of this can range from reduced concentration to sickness absence. This could lead to increased staff turnover and costs, in extreme cases, depression.

“Since on average European office workers spend over 7 hours a day using a laptop, computer or tablet, there are lots people throughout Europe that can benefit from having the correct ergonomic solutions in their working environment.
“Good ergonomics can help with the following benefits:

  •    Increase productivity
  •    Improve worker morale
  •    Reduce health issues such as repetitive stress injuries, back and neck strain, eye strain, muscular pains and headaches”

It’s a new year and you may well be sorting through paperwork, throwing out old files and documents that you no longer need. It makes sense. But it also makes sense to make sure you get rid of that information safely, without putting your business at risk of fraudulent activity.
ID Fraud has been prevalent for a number of years now and thanks to things like the Stop ID Fraud Campaign from Fellowes awareness of the risks, and how to prevent them has grown in recent years enabling us all to take simple steps to help reduce the chances of us being the next victim.
If you think you may have been a victim of ID Fraud, follow these simple steps:
Report the matter to the police immediately. Corporate ID Theft is a criminal matter.
Notify your suppliers, vendors and partners, as well as Companies House. They may also be able to give you advice.
If your customer or client details have been compromised, tell them. If someone has contacted them as a ‘representative’ then this is a strong indicator that this has happened.
Get your company’s credit report and Companies House record and make sure they tally.
Keep a record of all correspondence relating to the corporate ID fraud. You may need it both to protect yourself and for any criminal investigations on your behalf.
Learn from it.

If you had a risk management policy in place, review it. If you didn’t, then get one.
